This has been quite a stressful few weeks, but to be honest that just seems like my whole uni experience so far. But don’t worry there are rainbows at the end!
So as you guys know I’ve been working in a group of Art and Design students, we had to come together to make and design a bag. The beginning went pretty smoothly, we managed to come up with a design that we all were happy with and were able to crack on with the real thing. The only thing I would say was an issue at this point was communication. I didn’t actually know what everyone was doing and some people didn’t attend much and have much input on the progress that was being made. I think this slowed us down greatly because we ended up going off on different tangents, wanting different things and when it came together it didn’t always mesh well.
I ended up making, pattern cutting and sewing most of the bag. I was quite frustrated when making it as the material that was bought was really slidy, making it awkward to sew. It also was a really thin fabric which was not suitable for the look we were going for, as the thickness didn’t hold it’s shape very well. I wanted to line it with a studier fabric so we could get the results we were looking for. But by that time it was too late to get material as the deadline was too close. So after racking our brains and speaking to a tutor for advice we decided to line it with card.
I’m really not happy with how the bag has turned out. However, I think we have all learnt a lesson with this, which is to communicate more about what’s best for our product and time manage ourselves.
